Nelson County, VA. and Inglewood Lavender Farm

"Drink Wine. This is life eternal.  This is all that youth will give you.  It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends.  Be happy for this moment.  This moment is your life."- Omar Khayyam

The Nelson County area of Southern Virginia is home to many breathtaking views, lovely wineries, breweries, eclectic antique shops and a family owned lavender farm.  Inglewood Lavender Farm sits off Route 29 along a long, winding stretch of road, tucked among the crests and valleys of rolling, green hills, frothy trees and wildflowers.

You'll follow the cream and purple signs that point you towards the lavender farm and before you know it, you'll come upon a painted sign marking the entrance to a quaint, quiet revere.

After you find a spot to park the car, you'll enter a white fenced in yard with a rock lined path leading to a small, white house.  Inside you'll find built in shelves filled with Lavender products!  Everything from Lavender soap, shampoo, lotions and honey.  You'll also find painted teapots, china, tea accessories and dried lavender bundles.  You may also find sleeping kitties in cozy corners.

We suggest cutting some fresh lavender for yourself or friends before you take home all the lovely goodies in the shop, so grab your shears and make your way out into the fields.  Out in the distance you'll see the lovely Inglewood Estate, perched on a hill top, red brick with white columns along the front, it sits high and proud, overlooking the beautiful Virginia countryside.  If you hit a local grocer, farmers market or produce stand before your visit you can bring a lovely picnic and enjoy it under the cool shade of the large trees near the lavender shop with the lavender fields beckoning you in the foreground.

When you've picked up your lavender products and you have your fresh bundles in hand, head back out to 29S and you'll hit Lazy Days Winery.  Lazy Days is home to many festivals throughout the year, the biggest being their Garlic Festival in October and the VA Wine Festival coming up this weekend:)  Large fields surround the tasting room, inside you'll enjoy the many different wines they make.  I wanted to take home one of everything after my tasting, alas I could only comfortably afford 3 different bottles of wine...speaking of which, I'm almost out, might need to head back in the very near future;)  Off 29 along Route 6 you'll explore other fantastic wineries, antique shops and more amazing views!!!

Veritas Vineyards and Winery is a family owned and operated winery.  This place is absolutely stunning!  Enjoy a delicious tasting and a cheese plate in the beautiful tasting room, on the veranda or out at many of the picnic tables overlooking the mountain vistas in the distance.  My favorite wine, their Chardonnay!!!!  Crisp, light and refreshing, without the buttery, oaki-ness of many Chardonnays.  If you need a break from the vines, Tuckahoe Antique Mall is just down the road.  Take a pit stop and enjoy the many treasures inside.  You'll find antique china, Victorian accessories, old books and more!!!

If beer is more to your taste, head over to the Devil's Backbone Brewery for one of their many beer flights, a glass or a pitcher of your favorite brew, and they have many choices:) And if you're still hungry, they have great burgers, fish and chips, pulled pork sandwiches and other yummys to fill your tummy!!!

Enjoy a day for the senses!!!  The taste of fantastically delicious Virginia wines, the smell of soft lavender, fresh from the field, the touch of the velvety flowers in the gardens around the vineyards, the sounds of birds chirping and people laughing and talking over eats and drinks, and the sights of the blue ridge mountains smoking with fresh fog after a short rain fall.
